Choosing the right safety padlock comes down to three things: the body material (plastic, aluminium, or steel), the keying system (keyed-different, keyed-alike, or master-keyed), and the environment it will be used in. The best lockout padlock is non-conductive where needed, durable, and uniquely keyed to each authorized worker.
Why lockout padlocks are different
A safety (lockout) padlock is not a security padlock. It exists to hold an energy-isolating device in the safe position during maintenance, so it must be instantly recognisable, individually keyed, and built to survive industrial conditions. Under OSHA 1910.147 each authorized employee applies their own lock, and only they can remove it.
Plastic vs aluminium vs steel
- Plastic (thermoplastic / nylon) — lightweight, non-conductive, and corrosion-proof. The best choice for electrical work and harsh or chemical environments where a non-conductive body is essential.
- Aluminium — a strong, lightweight metal body with an anodised finish, available in many colours for department coding. A solid all-rounder for general industrial use.
- Steel (laminated / brass) — maximum physical strength for heavy-duty or high-abuse areas, at the cost of weight and conductivity (not for live electrical isolation).

Keying: keyed-different, keyed-alike, master
Keying defines who can open which lock — the heart of a LOTO program:
- Keyed different (KD) — every lock has a unique key. The default for personal lockout: one worker, one key.
- Keyed alike (KA) — a group of locks share one key, useful when one person isolates many points.
- Master keyed (MK) — a supervisor key opens a set of locks. Use with caution and a written policy, since it can undercut the "only the person who applied it removes it" principle.
Shackle, colour and durability
Match the shackle diameter and clearance to your isolation points and hasps. Use colour to code by department or hazard, and choose UV- and chemical-resistant bodies for outdoor or process areas. Each padlock should carry a durable label or laser-marked ID.
